A “remarkable” California teen stabbed and left for dead on a rural California roadway led cops to her killers with her dying words, authorities said.
When a man carpooling to work came upon Lizette Andrea Cuesta on a road in Livermore, east of San Francisco Monday, she was covered in so much blood he couldn’t tell what color her hair was.
The 19-year-old had crawled on her stomach for nearly 100 yards along the roadway, leaving a trail of blood behind her.
“She fought like a soldier, like a warrior,” Richard Loadholt, who discovered the teen, told Fox40.
Cuesta, who is originally from San Jose, was airlifted to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, where she died after suffering multiple stab wounds and other injuries, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
But before her death, she was able to give investigators a crucial piece of information.
“The last thing, we believe, that she was able to do was point us in the direction of the people that killed her,” said Alameda County Sheriff Sgt. Ray Kelly. “And that’s pretty remarkable.”
On Tuesday, cops announced they’d arrested Daniel Gross, 19, and Melissa Leonardo, 25, for stabbing the teen and throwing her out of their car onto the roadway.
“This young woman clung to life when she was left for dead and was able to live for another couple of hours and get us that information,” Kelly said. “Ultimately that led us to these arrests.”
Authorities haven’t released any information about why the pair, who are apparently dating, attacked the teen, KRON reported.
Cops did say Cuesta had willingly gotten into their car.
The teen was living in Tracy with her dad, Ray Cuesta, relatives said. She attended San Jose City College, according to her Facebook page.
Roberto Cuesta, the girl’s uncle, told CBS Sacramento that he was proud of his “fighter” of a niece.
“She was always a fighter, she was always brave, strong, a leader,” he said. “You know, she showed them that she didn’t give up, you know!”
Both suspects are in custody at Santa Rita jail and will be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.
